Today I went to London. I viewed the largest working brig (sailing ship with two square-rigged masts) in the world. The brig arrived few days ago in London.
The Fryderyk Chopin is moored at St Katherine’s Pier beside St Katherine’s Dock by Tower Bridge.
Built in the Polish port of Gdañsk in 1992 (Szczecin is its home port), the brig is 55.47 m long, a beam of 8.71 m, a draught of 4.2 m and takes a maximum crew of 51 (all of whom are needed on its regular trips to the Caribbean!).
The ship and its crew have been stopping all over Europe to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth and to promote his music, Polish culture and to have fun! The brig with crew will also play a part in next week’s Thames Festival. The brig will be in London until 12 September and is open to the public.
They have a huge programme of all things Chopin related – music, ballet in the rigging, piano painting, building a giant statue of Chopin and generally having fun!
